Do you ever wonder about things like this? Who does it? Why do they do it? Is it a world-wide phenomenon, or just something done by knuckleheads around here?
I wouldn't call it a favorite pastime up here in NY but I see it often enough. I think it ranks up there with other idle pursuits such as firing pencils up into the acoustic ceiling tiles at school. It takes two or three tries to do it, then after it's done you feel silly and pretend it wasn't you..
My police officer brother-in-law Phillip, told me once that it was a signal to drug buyers about where the dealers would be. However, we encountered a large tree with shoes once on a vacation to Arkansas. I'll dig it out and see if I can find it and scan it for you. It had hundreds!
This reminds of that great movie "Wag the Dog" - before watching it, I honestly thought it was only the local knuckleheads who did that - mostly male and teenaged. I have to say I've only seen this very puzzling thing happen in the US - do people's feet hurt more there, or something?
yep - all over - I saw that up in Yorkshire last time I was there... when you think what people do to get trainers, it is odd. My uncle told me people throw their friends' trainers up onto the wires - as a joke, I suppose.
This reminds me of something I saw while back on a ski lift at, I think, Camelback Mountain in Pennsylvania. At one point high on the lift we passed the "bra tree," whose otherwise barren branches were decorated with scores of brassieres (and perhaps, courtesy of a few of the more daring skiers, a few panties as well). I guess after proving yourself there you get on a plane and go for the "Mile High Club."
