Big happy sigh

Elm, Andrews, Texas

At last I found some fall colors! I got this shot of an old elm in front of an old closed school in Andrews when I was there last week.

Yea! You found some fall colors at last. I know you love this season. I didn't think we would have any fall colors but surprise, it came after all.

I admit I am a bit ignorant about the US, though I know it is a big country, but I know that it is famed for the lovely colours of the leaves in autumn ('New England in The Fall' New England - is that near you? lol). These ones are no exception and I think I have read somewhere that it is due to the particular combination of weather, light and humidty. I particularly like the combination of gold and black, and it reminds me of a mandala of a sunflower which Sandollar did recently.

This picture almost reminds me of a colour photo effect on a black and white photo (a bit like Bobbie's little brother and bike she did!), such is the contrast.

I'm actually surprised. I don't really remember many trees in the area being so colorful. Leave it to you to notice them.

I'm ignorant about the UK, too, Bev, so don't feel bad. I think most all areas of the US have some sort of fall colors, except for the extreme south. And like you say the North East is renown for the color there. Do you not have fall color there at all -- or, like here, is it just not dramatic?

I tweaked the contrast because the shot I got just didn't capture the full effect of those leaves as I had standing there in the sun with them glimmering. Is that cheating? I felt like it wasn't because likely a very high end camera (or more likely a person who knows what they are doing with a camera) would have gotten the colors right. In any case, what I hoped to convey was the experience of standing among those immensely yellow leaves.

Dry and sunny (I think that's you) are the best conditions for producing the colours, and wet and cloudy (us) is where the colours aint so good! But we still get some nice subtle effects, quite impressionist. New England is the best place as you also get the coolness at night which is the icing on the cake.

Hey, Debi, don't tell us your secrets! lol I honestly didn't know camera could do this sort of thing and just thought the school was in the shade. A magician should never tell the secret of his illusions!
