Overpass Art

New Interstate 20 overpass

It takes about a year to complete a new highway overpass, including this new one that is in front of Audrey and David's old employers.

Recently Texas has been incorporating these cement reliefs, each one different, each one reflecting an aspect of the area where the overpass is built. I think it is a splendid idea and certainly more interesting than plain gray cement.

Wonder how many of these there are in the state now, and wonder what each one depicts? For now, my favorite is ours! :)

Yes, this is an inspired idea! I bet wet cement is actually an ideal art material for making these reliefs, and the result is very sharp and clear. I like the way they have made natural things out of the ultimate utilitarian industrial material. This way the drivers get some pleasure and interest as they drive along and some artist somewhere has got the pleasure of doing it. Everyone's happy!

I love this idea, and have seen a few of them but this is the prettiest so far. Tyler has a rose (rose city) made of cement block. The yellow truck looks like a toy in the second photo.

Wow, I have followed you here from the 2 things blog. I am seriously impressed. I couldn't possibly pick a favorite. You have the eyes of a camera so to speak. Seeing things as photographs instead of just things and you have obviously mastered your camera. I will be back to have a nosey through the archives later too! Can I be cheeky and ask where you got the calender style layout?
Thankyou for sharing your talent with us:)
