My new palette

Ceramic palette

I love "junking," as we call it in my family. That is, going to garage sales, Goodwill, Salvation Army, and second-hand thrift stores -- anywhere where you can find fun junk for cheap. Part of the pleasure (there are many pleasures to it, in my opinion) is finding mysterious things but because you don't know their original intent, you are free to devise your own.

And so here you have one such item. This little beauty makes a perfect paint palette. All for a buck. I love the deepness of the wells, the ease of cleaning, and that handle is quite handy.

Do you know what it is really for? It's not even close to what I'm using it for! ;)

(P.S. For Neda and Rima, if they are watching. Do you see something of special meaning to you in this picture?)

Debi, you're so cute - and of course you have a special book on your desk! I have the same drawers, btw. and the bottle(s) -love'em - and the jar (i've been known to buy Pommerantz grainy mustard just for the container). We all love "junking" in my family but I prefer to call it treasure hunting. Best finds: a Leika camera, a steamer trunk, and a little Japanese doll.

Ahem.. now, let me clear my throat, and parade my know-it-all status here... this dish, although fabulous for paint and to store rings, is actually a baking dish for escargot (snails for the rest of us). Apparently, they are scrumptious with parsley and garlic and wine. I wouldn't know because you can't pay me enough to try one. Can't say the same about either Neda or Fawzan, hehe.

I feel it has something to do with eggs. It reminds me of something I have which I use to poach eggs, with the little round egg compartments, though, come to look at it perhaps they are too small, and perhaps snail shaped!

A lovely round white smooth object, circular in every sense. A bit like an egg lol
These thrift stores are great. You get the satisfaction of buying things for a minimum of their original cost, and you get a whole lot of indiscriminate items which haven't been chosen by the shop's buyer and you can let your imagination run riot, as you have!

Escargot cooker, why I be! Now we know. I google imaged it to make sure 'cause you never know what Rima might come up with. Sad to say I have never tried these, but when I think how slimey a snail is then maybe it isn't so sad

Debi! You have a pencil holder engraved with the words Liban! Yay!! Thanks for the reference and the sweet memories. You are very kind. As for the white container, I immediately thought -- like your genius self -- of it being used for paint. Great idea. I can almost feel the surface. I thought it was for eggs (like Bev) but I guess Ms.know-it-all might be right...Please, can you prove her wrong? And yes, although I hate meat and rarely eat chicken, I LOVE escargot with a coriander and a zest of lemons. Yum! Cheers!

It looks heavy. My first instinct would be to threaten David with bodily harm with it. ;) Gotta keep 'em line.

Escargot huh? yeeeeeuck.

Is that yellow paint drips I see?

Rima! It's so good to see your sweet icon and even sweeter to see your comments again. ((((Big Hug)))) to you! Et tu as raison, mais naturellement :) And like you, I have never tried snail, but with enough wine, lemon juice, and good company I could bring myself to try it once.

Bev: At first glance, I too thought it might be an egg poacher. Heck, who says it couldn't be used for that? VERY small eggs, that is. You'll have to tell us about UK thrift stores some time.

Mom: I'm completely surprised you have tried escargot! You, the great adventuress of our family!

Neda: Another happy hello to an icon and commentor I haven't seen in a while! Yes, it is a pencil holder from Lebanon, one of those inlaid wood thingies you find all over the gift shops there. Sadly it's come apart at the seems, thus the yellow rubber band holding it together.

Audrey: It's not terribly heavy, but it would hurt, I'm sure of it. You sharp-eyed imp you. Yes, that's yellow paint drips. I bragged that it was easy to clean up and then I see I didn't clean it up so well after all. ha

oh, yeah - and I resent the inclusion of "if you are watching"; of course we're watching all the time! In fact, I put a "Deb" button right there on my links thingie so I don't have to go look in the updates every few hours! Also I thought this was a book, not a pencil holder - even though i have nifty brand new glasses.
