Not for arachnaphobes

What's this flower? Oh, not a flower!

Now I have a terrible dilemma. This ball of a zillion baby spiders is less than an inch from my gate latch. Even if I think I could avoid them myself I have a granddaughter that visits through that gate. I guess I'm going to have to kill them. I really don't want to, though. And the second dilemma is How?

Are they going to grow into big boys? If not, why do you want rid of them? They eat so many nasties, flies, for one.
Is Katlynn scared of them?
The garden here is full of them at the moment, our main problem is the males coming into the house - for some reason they think the females will be in here. My daughter has a real phobia - so her window is taped shut and we have a glass and a piece of card handy at all times, poor baby.
If you want to move them from there, my advice is to get a broom or a mop, tie a bit of old cloth round it and just put it under the next and lift the whole lot off. Then you can dump the cloth somewhere else on your property far away from the gate. Some spiders will survive some won't..

every time I see one of those, I always hear a tiny voice crying:"help me, help me!" like in that old movie, The Fly, with Vincent Price...shudder....

I think I would have to get rid of them - don't know how. I don't like creepy crawly things even when I know they do some good.

Funny, we had a spider problem today. Two very large spiders had got into our bath. I always slip a piece of paper under a cup to take them outside. My husband, who has kept snakes and terrapins, doesn't mind picking them up.

I think it would be a good idea to take them somewhere else, as Frances suggests. I always feel a bit bad about destroying a spider's web as such work has gone into it but your grandaughter comes first in this instance.

You know me, I'd do as Frances says and move them somewhere far away, say your back 40. Most spiders are not poisionous, but the few that are make up for it. They will be totally dispersed in a couple of days anyway. I always trap and release any bugs I find in my house and haven't sprayed in years.

I have never seen a spider colony like this. Amazing! Maybe Mother Nature will take care of them...we'll get some rain soon enough ...Gorgeous image though
